2017 Vocal Instructions

The Festival’s vocal competition will be held Friday April 7th at Margaret W. Carpenter Recreation Center located at 111th and Colorado Blvd. Vocalists will be divided into four divisions or levels according to their age as of March 15, 2017. The goal of the vocal competition is to nurture the young student, provide a performance venue and judging critique for students and to prepare the serious vocal student for college entrance. All vocalists are required to prepare solos of quality literature and to perform selected music as written. The first selection should be a folk song, art song or opera presentation and should be performed in the classical style. Overt dramatic gestures are not permitted for this selection.

The second selection — Disney, musical theater, foreign language or Gilbert and Sullivan — may contain dramatic interpretation and gestures. No props please. Music representing pop culture is not acceptable.

Students are required to furnish their own piano accompanist and we strongly recommend that teachers do not accompany their own students. CDs are not permitted.  Any variation of this requirement must be approved by administrators. Students may not enter selections they performed for previous Festivals. Following the registration process the vocal schedule will be posted online at www.youngartistsalliance.com. Changes to this schedule will be considered until March 15th. Any questions regarding scheduling and acceptable repertoire should be e-mailed to youngartistsalliance@comcast.net. The criteria for each vocal division is listed below:

Junior Division (ages 10-12): Students are required to prepare two songs of contrasting styles and musical periods.

  1. A folksong or art song performed in classical style
  2. A musical theater selection or a song from the Disney Musical repertoire


Intermediate Division (ages 13-14): Students are required to prepare two songs of contrasting styles and musical periods.

  1. Either an English or foreign art song, or a classically set folksong
  2. A musical theater selection or Gilbert and Sullivan


Senior A (ages 15-16): Students are required to prepare two songs of contrasting styles and musical periods.

  1. A foreign language art song or an aria
  2. A musical theater selection or Gilbert and Sullivan


Senior B (ages 17-through High School Graduation): Students are required to prepare three songs of contrasting styles and musical periods. Vocalists will perform two selections. The student will choose the first selection to be performed and a judge will choose the second selection.

  1. An Italian art song or aria
  2. A foreign language art song or aria, original language (Italian not accepted)
  3. A musical theater selection or Gilbert and Sullivan


All students will perform for a panel of judges during public recitals to begin at 6 pm Friday, April 7th. Teachers, family and friends are welcome to attend this performance at no cost. The competition will be judged on musicianship, technique and presentation. Highly-edited arrangements require accurate classical interpretations. Memorization is required for participation and students must limit their performance time to no more than 10 minutes. Performance order will be determined by random draw.

Students may enter up to three performing arts disciplines if one is the Drama Competition. Students may not enter selections they performed for previous TASHCO Festivals. Festival administrators reserve the right to combine or add divisions as necessary to assure an equitable competition.

Note:  Stage rehearsals will not be held for vocal participants.

Registration will be done exclusively online this year. The registration fee is $30 and the registration deadline is March 4, 2017 by 12 midnight. Late registration will be available for $40 with a late registration deadline of March 8, 2017 by 12 midnight.

Before you register, we ask that you take some time to go through the following checklist to make sure that you have all the information you need to complete your registration.

Verify your competition(s) performance selections. Do they meet the criteria? Check the title and composer for spelling accuracy.
Have you timed your performances? This is a MUST.
Draft your program bio before you register. You are asked to write a few sentences about your background. Tell about other performing arts areas of study, other interests and hobbies. What are your long-term goals as they relate to the arts?
Verify your teacher’s approval for participation. Know his/her phone number and e-mail for verification purposes.

IMPORTANT: As you register the 1st Name should be the Credit Card Holder. The 2nd Name should be the student’s name as it should appear in the program.
